Daniel Rassum

Daniel Rassum

I met Daniel Rassum by divine appointment June 11, 2008 outside a Whole Foods Market in NC, where he was playing blues guitar for tips to pay for crack.

Within an hour, we were headed across the country together. Me introducing people to my book as part of the Samson Society Road Cruise, and Daniel playing guitar, experiencing a new kind of love, and continually exclaiming how awesome God is.

The night before we met, there’d been a storm in Winston-Salem. I’d grumbled to myself about the thunder keeping me awake in my hotel room. Daniel had been about 200 yards away, sleeping under a highway overpass.

We spent 17 days together, going from North Carolina to Atlanta to San Antonio to San Diego to San Luis Obispo, where Daniel boarded a bus and headed to the Friends of Alcoholics facility in Jackson, MS, where Scott Grissom (who rode with us from Atlanta to Phoenix) had spent the previous summer. The night before Daniel left California, he opened for Tony Campolo in front of a full house.

Daniel spent 8 weeks in rehab, then 8 months living in Franklin, TN with brothers from the Samson Society. Today he’s reconciled his marriage, his relationship with his grown children, and is clean.

He and I tell our story together whenever we can. You can download his music for free – or a donation of your choosing – at noisetrade.
